Washington, D.C. - Late last night, Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly announced he will revoke Obama’s executive action to protect millions of undocumented parents known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). The announcement came together with the decision to maintain protections for undocumented youth under the original Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for the time being.
The following is a statement from Sameera Hafiz, Advocacy Director for We Belong Together:
“The Trump Administration’s announcement comes as families around the country prepare to celebrate Father’s Days with their loved ones. Once again, Trump and his agents are promoting an agenda of tearing families and communities apart, above the well-being and security of our country’s children.
Trump’s ICE Director confirmed these inhumane policies earlier this week by stating that undocumented members of our communities ‘should look over your shoulder, and you need to be worried.’
Trump and his Administration can’t try to score political points by temporarily maintaining DACA until further notice and saying he will handle the situation of immigrant youth with compassion and heart, while at the same time threatening to deport their parents and loved ones.”
