After 15 years of organizing domestic workers, I am transitioning out of my role as Campaign Director at the National Domestic Workers Alliance and Chair of the We Belong Together campaign, to build political power for our communities in my home state of Florida as Executive Director of New Florida Majority.
We Belong Together is a vision for our nation, growing a spirit of sisterhood, and a living commitment to movement building. It brings a needed gender lens to immigration policy, helps women to see immigrant rights as central to women's equality, and elevates the leadership of immigrant women and girls.
Working side by side with domestic workers and immigrant families has deeply transformed me. I am forever grateful for all the lessons learned. The women at Mujeres Unidas y Activas in Oakland and San Francisco, my first home in this movement, taught me about real leadership. The 100 women that participated in our 100-miles pilgrimage for migrant dignity showed me what resilience looks like. And, very recently, the kids who drove to D.C. on a caravan to stand up for their families gave me much needed hope for the future.
The work all of you do throughout the country to defend immigrant families, our democracy and our dignity, gives me the certainty that we will not let these trying times crush our morale and our values.
The work of We Belong Together is more important now than ever before, and I am confident that immigrant women will continue leading the way.
I invite you to support We Belong Together to invest in women and girl’s leadership as we stand strong against deportations, create and expand sanctuary spaces, and build power to defend our families and keep them together.
We belong together always.
